• Biographical note: 2003, Greenville, TX.3
Our grandmother, whom the "Blue" Giddens' kids called,
"Ma",
was a sweet-dispositioned person. I
never heard her raise her voice. She never even hinted at spanking or
disciplining us.
"Ma' gave all her
grandchildren a Christmas present, even though she would be called
"low-income" nowadays. The boys got a sack of marbles, the girls,
"paper-dolls", I think. That was a good Christmas in those days.
I have since lost all my marbles,
but hope to find them all eventually.
Every once in a while I find one
in the yard, and think of my grandmother.
They say she was red-headed and
freckle-faced when she was young.
She weighed around 90 pounds when
she was married, but grew to about twice that; and so have we all.
I loved going to her house when
we lived in Sundown because she would always take time to talk to me. She was
also a blessing to me when I was a teenager, and she lived with us briefly in
Odessa.
• Religion: Methodist.
• FYI:4 In 1873 a post office opened;
also in the 1870s the Savoy Male and Female College began operations and the
Texas and Pacific Railway extended its tracks through the community. By that
time Savoy had twenty-five businesses, including several cotton gins, four
dry-goods stores, two steam gristmills, two hotels, and a hardware store. On
the eve of World War Iqv Savoy had some twenty-seven businesses, including a
bank and a weekly newspaper; by the end of World War IIqv it had thirteen
businesses...

located 9 miles from Winnsboro, S.C. at the intersection of 321 & 34, which
is the 321 bypass at Winnsboro, 34 West to the Lebanon Presbyterian Church,
left on 54, Jackson Creek Road (small road south to Jackson creek). The marker
is on the right side of the road on a corner of a smaller road. Intersection of
213 is past the road. Return on 54 about 3/4 mile, on the left a stone marker
"Gladney Cemetery" by a small dirt road, left on this dirt road and
up a small hill, for 1 mile, through a gate and into a pasture. Although the
cemetery itself has been deeded to the Gladney Family Association, by Mr. Ed
Stevenson the old Gladney land surrounding it belongs to him, he has for years
taken such an interest in the cemetery. Not many families are so fortunate. At
the end of this small road, turn immediately to the right and follow the fence
line around the pasture, the cemetery on the rise of the hill. The stone fence
has been taken down, only the stone posts remain and the wire fence is now
around the cemetery. The area, it is said, is on a part of Joseph Gladney's
land (he was the first Gladney to be sheltered by the land they loved and
worked so hard for.
Turning to the left (at the
pasture) and following the fence row and across some creeks back into the
woods, is the Widow Jane's property. There is a house in Winnsboro containing
the stair case that was in Jane's house, also many houses contain some of the
boards, Ed Stevenson took some of the boards and nails
to put on his barn, so as to preserve some of the original wood from those who
helped themselves to the property. Ed said, loggers
took the fence out, without permission--the granite slabs of the fence are gone
except for some of those on the right side of the fence, laying on the ground.

Breeding (seal) Signed sealed and
declared as for the last will and testament of the above named Spencer Breeding
in the presence of John Sewell, E. D. Kernan
Virginia to wit: At a court held
for Russell County on the 7th day of July 1835
This instrument of writing was exhibited in court as and for the last
will and testament of Spencer Breeding, deceased, and proven by the oaths of
John Sewell and Edward D. Kernan the subscribing witnesses thereto, to be his
true last will and testament, and ordered to be recorded. And James P. Carrell
the executor therein named refusing to take upon himself the ___ of the
executor thereof, Hannah Breeding the widow of the
testator appeared in open court and relinquished her right to administer.
Whereupon William K. Colley who married Alsy a daughter of the testator and is
still living, and who, had the said Spencer Breeding died intestate would have
been entitled to a portion of his estate as a distributor but to whom nothing
is devised by the will aforesaid, applied in court for administration there
being no other application by any other person either as legatee or
distributor; and it appearing to the court that the said widow and those
interested in the estate concurred in wishing the said Colley appointed as
administrator, and it further appearing that Spence Breeding an infant of seven
or eight years old one of the legatees named in said will has died since the date
of the said will and previous to the death of the testator, it was insisted
upon by the counsel of the testator in a suit brought and now pending in the
Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery of this county, in the name of the
said Spencer Breeding against Jesse Vermillion and Samuel Leace, that the said
William K. Colley was by law entitled to receive the appointment of
administrator in preference to any person who in case there had been no will
was not a distributee, which motion was opposed by the counsel of the said
Vermillion, as well because, he contended, no right accrued to him under the
circumstances, and because in the suit aforesaid the said William K. Colley was
deemed an important witness in behalf of the defense, and had heretofore been summoned
and depended on as such, and of whose testimony the defendants in the suit
aforesaid, would be deprived if appointed the representative of the testator. Whereupon the court refused to grant letter of administration to
the said William K. Colley and appointed Robert Stinson to that situation who
is not interested in the estate as a legatee or distributee. And the
said Robert Stinson having taken the oath prescribed by law, and entered into
and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of $3000 with George Smith and George S.
Jessee his securities, conditioned as the law directs, certificate is granted
the said Robert Stinson for obtaining letters of administration on the said
decedants estate with his will annexed in due form. Teste, James P. Carrell, C.R.C. SPENCER R.BREEDING SR was born in Augusta

Bible. On 8 Jan 1833 in Russell Co,
Virginia Spencer appeared before the Russell County Court and gave his age as
about 73. He made a sworn statement regarding his service in the Revolutionary
War. He said he entered the service from Rockingham County, Virginia about
1779. SPENCER died 24 Jun 1835 in Artrip, Russell Co, Virginia at 76 years of
age. His body was interred 27 Jun 1835 in Artrip, Russell Co, Virginia Breeding

Finney's marriage is recorded. In the license her name is given as Elizabeth
Finney. In another place her name is given Elizabeth Finnell, daughter of
Thomas Finnell. It is also stated that she is "above the age of twenty
one." Elizabeth was born in Orange
County Virginia about 1765, she died 31 Mar 1822 in
Artrip, Russell Co, Virginia at 56 years of age. Spencer Breeding married Hannah Hicks, in
1822 not long after Elizabeth's death ,she would have
been between 13 and 15 years old, HANNAH
was born circa 1807/ 1812. The 2nd marriage record for Hannah, widow, shows her
age as 43 in 1855 which would make her born in 1811 or 1812. The 1850 Russell
County, Virginia Census shows Hannah as age 40 and living with John Jessee but
doesn't show relationship. Possibly Mother-In-Law, this would place her birth
at around 1810. Hannah was the daughter of Claibourne Hicks and Elizabeth She married

one room on the third floor to defend themselves against Indian attack.By
placing their guns through holes in the logs on all sides of the room they
could fire at the Indians. There were also larger openings in the logs over the
doors and windows. If an Indian came to a door or window, they could pour hot
water on them. The whole house was put together with wooden pegs. The Breeding's mined salt peter from the
Peter Cave on Clinch River. They hauled it to a location near the log house and
boiled it down making gun powder."
• RWS Pension Application: On this 8th day of January
1833 personally appeared before the County Court of Russell County in the State
of Virginia, Spencer Breeding, a resident of the County of Russell and State of
Virginia, aged about seventy three years, who being first duly sworn according
to law, doth on his oath, make the following declarations in order to obtain
the benefit of the provisions made by the Act of Congress passed June 7th,
1832. That he entered the service in
the Revolutionary War in Rockingham County in the State of Virginia but does
not now remember the year, but thinks it was 1779 under Capt. Frazer, and after
marching to Col. Smith's in the upper end of said County or lower end of
Augusta, about 30 miles from the place of their rendezvous, joined a company
from Augusta County under the command of Captain Givins, and that they were
then placed under the command of Col. William Bowyer, the name of the Major not
now recollected and marched from thence to the now State of Ohio against the
hostile Indians, on a three months' tour, and after arriving at the Ohio river,
they engaged in building a Fort, since called McIntosh in honor of General
McIntosh under whose command they were then placed, where they remained until
the said tour of three months had expired, and was then discharged and returned
home to Rockingham County in the State of Virginia, without having been engaged
in any battle and as he now remembers during the ensuing summer, which he
thinks was in the year 1780, he was drafted on a tour of three months to go
against the British forces about Norfolk and Portsmouth, in the State of
Virginia, and that he was attached to the company commanded by Capt. Michael
Cogar, Lieutenant Michael Rhuark, the name of the Ensign not recollected, and
were placed under the command of Major Hamilton, and Col. William Noll and
marched from Rockinham County in Virginia to Richmond and from thence to Sandy
point, where they crossed James River and from thence to Smithfield and from
thence to the neighborhood of Portsmouth then in the possession of the British,
and after remaining there a short time marched in a South direction to a place
called Edmond Hills, and the term for which he had last entered the service
having then expired were then discharged without having been engaged, in any
battle, except some small skirmishes and he returned after having served the
first time against the Indians three months under General McIntosh and three
months in the State Line against the British, making in all six months. He
hereby relinquished every claim whatsoever to a pension or an annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the

7680. Earliest Virginia Colonists .
Noted events in his life were:
• Immigrated: 20 Dec 1606, VA.181
An interesting account of this memorable expedition was written by George
Percy, or Pereie, a
brother of the Earl of Northumberland,
in whose honor a county in the Northern Neck of Virginia
was named. He was a member of this
first expedition to form a permanent settlement. When Captain
John Smith returned to England in
1609, Percy was president in his stead, which office he held
during "The Starving Time,"
in 1610, and later was Lieutenant-Governor. The history of the colony
during the days they were seeking a
final seating place can best be told in his own recital of those
events.
He described the voyage to
Virginia as beginning on Saturday, Dec. 20, 1606, (other writers, Dec.
19), "the fleet fell from
London, and the first of January we anchored in the Downer but the winds
continued contrarie so long, that we were
forced to stay there some time."He gives an interesting
description of the places where the fleet
stopped en route to Virginia, and the habits of the
aborigines whom the colonists met, and with
whom they exchanged trinkets for food. They left the
West Indies on the tenth of April, and all went well with the fleet until "the one
and twentieth day
about five a clocke at night there
began a vehement tempest, which lasted all the night, with winds,
raine, and thunders in a terrible
manner. Wee were forced to lie at Hull (bare poles) that night
because wee thought wee had beene neerer
land than wee were."The next three days they sounded
the lead for land "but wee
could find no ground at a hundred fathom."
"The sixth and twentieth day
of Aprils, about fours a clock in the morning, wee descried the Land of
Virginia; the same day wee
entered into the Bay of Chesupioc directly, without let or hinderance;
there wee landed and discovered a
little way, but we could find nothing worth speaking of, but faire
meddowes and goodly tall Trees, with such
Freshwaters running through the woods, as I was
almost ravished at the sight."
"At night, when wee were
going aboard, there came the Savages creeping up on all foures, from the
Hills like Beares, with their
Bowes in their mouthes, charged us very desperately in the faces, hurt
Captaine Gabrill Archer in both
his hands, and a sayler (named Mather Morton) in two places of the
body very dangerous. After they had
spent their Arrowes, and felt the sharpnesse of our shot, they
retired into the Woods with great noise,
and so left us.
• Fact:182 If you are searching for
ancestors in the 1700's in Virginia it is likely that they are descendants of
the earliest Virginians. In most of my linking of ancestors I have simply gone
back to an earlier generation which was more than likely their kin.
Don Giddens 2006
Consider this note from
"Life in Old Virginia" found at New River Notes:
"Some Observations on
Tidewater People
The greater percentage of the
direct descendants of the original families who made the first
permanent settlement of the English
speaking people in America a success, are more likely to be
found in rural Tidewater Virginia than
in any locality of equal size elsewhere in the United States. Up
to the ending of the Civil War,
there were few accessions to the population of this section of
Virginia, and very few foreigners resident
there.
The United States Census of 1900
credited the State of Virginia with ninety-nine per cent. of
native
born population, and one per cent. of foreign born population, then resident within its limits.
The
one per cent. of
foreign born residents were largely within the cities and big towns of the
State.
In some counties of Tidewater
Virginia, one may travel for continuous days without meeting other
than native residents whose ancestors
came direct from Europe many years ago."
